Los Angeles County Fire Department Recognizes Good Samaritan

December 14, 2009

Shortly after 7:00 am on Monday, December 7th, a car traveling southbound on Malibu Canyon lost control in very rainy conditions and veered off the road, plunging 250 to 300 feet down the embankment. Drew Bruno, John Hayden, and Chris Kessler, all of whom witnessed this unfold, wasted no time and without hesitation or second thought of putting their own lives at risk, began climbing down the steep, muddy slope in an effort to provide help to the victim.

Upon arrival of Fire Department personnel, all three were at the vehicle and were able to shout up that the driver was uninjured, but trapped inside. As firefighters began setting up their rappel lines and coordinating the scene, Mr. Bruno climbed back up the slope to give a very detailed account of the scene below.

With the assistance of the Malibu Search & Rescue Team from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, the victim was extricated, assessed and, thankfully, had only minor injuries. The three individuals also suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department commends the actions of these individuals.
