One of the occupants was home at the time of the fire and called 9-1-1 to report her fireplace was on fire and spreading to the bedroom. She evacuated the house.
When firefighters arrived, the first floor was completely clear and second floor mostly clear. They noticed the fireplace in the bedroom was glowing and was going to check for extension when flames broke through the roof of the house. Firefighters were ordered to immediately evacuate the interior of the home, as they exited through the front door, the roof caved in falling all the way to the first floor in some places.
A second alarm was dispatched because of the intense fire. A house next door is extremely close; firefighters used the water from an elevated ladder platform to spray water to keep the house next door from catching fire. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.
The couple had just moved into the house within the past week, they had extensive work done to the house prior to moving in. They used the bedroom natural gas fire place for the first time Thursday night and again Friday night. The woman was home alone and found the fireplace glowing and called 9-1-1. Fire investigators believe the fire originated in the upstairs fireplace and extended to the attic. But before a final determination, they want to return to the house during daylight Saturday to recheck. Because of the extensive damage to the home, they felt it was too dangerous to enter the home at night. The woman did not require assistance from the American Red Cross. There were no injuries during the incident. Firefighters were planning to stay at the house the rest of the night until daylight on fire watch.
