House explosion rocks Sacramento neighborhood

February 8, 2010

SACRAMENTO, CA – An explosion in a vacant house rocked neighboring homes early Sunday morning, according to officials.

The blast happened just after 2 a.m. at the home on the 3900 block of 17th Avenue, said J.D. Guedi with Pacific Gas and Electric.

The explosion all but destroyed the unoccupied house, but no injuries were reported, according to Sacramento fire department spokesman Roberto Padilla. Firefighters arrived three minutes after the blast and were able to keep the resulting fire contained to a small portion of the house and surrounding trees.

Firefighters were able to turn the gas off and secure the area.

Guedi said PG&E crews called out to the scene determined there were no gas leaks. Fire officials were investigating what caused the blast and if arson was involved.
