The Vallejo Fire Department responded early Monday to a series of small fires in Indian Alley downtown and had to evacuate some 20 residents, Assistant Fire Chief Doug Robertson said.
“At about 1:45 a.m. we had five fires — one in a Dumpster, one on a mattress and a couple in garbage cans,” Robertson said. “We had to evacuate an apartment building because of the smoke.”
Though a suspect needed to be questioned and a bystander was threatening to assault fire personnel, Robertson said, calls to police drew no response, “We tried to get a policeman, but there were none available,” he said. “The suspect was questioned by our investigator, Bill Tweedy, and ruled out.”
