Firefighters to host benefit for Steven’s Hope

March 7, 2010

ONTARIO – For firefighters from Ontario’s Local 1430 union, helping out Steven’s Hope on St. Patrick’s Day has become as traditional as wearing green.

This year, for the eighth year in a row, the firefighters will be out en mass for their St. Patrick’s Day Tip the Firefighters fundraiser at El Torito restaurant, 3680 Inland Empire Blvd., Ontario.

The event runs from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. It includes a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Firefighters spend the day waiting on tables and selling shirts, shamrocks and green helmets, all to benefit the Upland-based nonprofit organization started by Tony and Sandy Cappelli.

Steven’s Hope is a charity started in loving memory of the Cappellis’ son, who had a fatal heart condition and lived 32 hours after birth.

The organization now helps seriously ill children and their families by providing housing, everyday necessities and emotional support through their ordeals. The group works with local hospitals throughout the Inland Valley, but housing units are owned and used near Loma Linda University Medical Center.

“We want to help kids in every way that we can. This is the biggest event we do as a department, and it allows us to meet with people in the community while helping a worthwhile local charity,” said Capt. Marty Perez in a prepared release.
