Two found dead after a fire destroys an Encinitas home

March 9, 2010

ENCINITAS — An elderly man in a wheelchair and an elderly woman perished in a fire Monday night that consumed their home, said Encinitas fire Deputy Chief Scott Henry.

The first firefighters arrived about 7:30 P.M. and reported flames shooting out of the roof and intense fire at the front of the single story home on Regal Road near Santa Fe Drive, Scott said. Because of the intensity of the blaze, they could not enter the home to search for the residents.

“There was just too much fire to mount a rescue,” Scott said.

Firefighters stopped the flames from spreading to nearby residences and a shopping center that borders the property.

The fire was knocked down about 40 minutes later and the man was found inside, Scott said. Arson investigators were called to determine the cause of the blaze, which had not been determined late Monday night.

When the investigators completed their work inside the charred home, firefighters performed a more extensive search of the four-bedroom house and found the woman, Scott said.
