Fire started outside behind the upholstery shop in a neat pile of furniture and other items commonly found behind a shop, only most of their material was combustible (able to burn).
Shop owners across street noticed the outside fire across the street and alerted people in the upholstery shop. Several near-by shop owners brought fire extinguishers and occupants of the upholstery shop used garden hoses to try to put the fire out, but it continued to grow quickly.
People fled, looking for dogs inside the store as they left, two dogs were taken out, a third could not be found. Firefighters arrived and worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to the other stores on the block.
Once that was accomplished, they worked to put the fire out in the upholstery store. It took over 90 minutes to knock the fire down. The cause of the fire is undetermined, fire investigators determined it started outside the building then moved inside.
Although it is in the same general area, this fire is not connected to the other incidents that occurred on S. Main Street on Sunday. Several streets in the area, including Main Street was closed for approximately three hours during the emergency.
