Firefighters are attacking a vegetation fire in Kern County that has burned several structures and forced some evacuations.
Kern County Fire Department spokesman Sean Collins says the fire started Monday afternoon in Bull Run Creek, about three miles north of Kernville. It had spread to just over 3 square miles — or 2,000 acres — by Monday evening.
The blaze was threatening homes and had burned some structures, but it wasn’t immediately known what types of buildings were destroyed.
Residents of Riverkern and the Camp Owen juvenile detention facility were evacuated.
No injuries have been reported.
A former gold rush town, Kernville is about 42 miles northeast of Bakersfield near the Sequoia National Forest. It’s a popular whitewater rafting destination.
