Two acres have burned so far and it could grow up to ten acres, according to Patterson.
The fire broke out Friday at about 3:37 p.m. at Thousand Palms Canyon Road and Dillon Road, inside the Coachella Valley Preserve.
Eight engines and more than 70 firefighters are on the scene battling the blaze. There have been no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Smoke could been seen from throughout the Valley. Several viewers called into KPSP Local 2 News saying they could see clouds of smoke.
