A 4-alarm fire broke out early Tuesday morning at a townhouse near Fruit and Ashlan.
The fire started after 12:30 a.m. and was so large the first fire crews to arrive had to call for backup.
The blaze quickly grew to a 4-alarm fire and at one point, 55 firefighters were on the scene.
Fire crews were able to confine the damage to one townhouse building.
Fresno Fire Battalion Chief Chuck Tobias said, “When we got here, we had two townhouses, two stories in one building that were burning through the roof. Flames were roughly about 30-40 feet in the air, gigantic smoke column.”
One resident of the townhouse was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns. No firefighters were injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
