HANFORD – The Hanford Fire Department teamed up with nonprofit group Hope Worldwide Fresno to give away 450 smoke alarms and 250 carbon monoxide detectors to local residents on Saturday afternoon.

The effort, part of Hope Worldwide’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, featured more than 50 volunteers going door to door. Volunteers also passed out batteries and handouts on fire safety in both English and Spanish.

The group focused on the neighborhoods between Grangeville and Lacey boulevards and from 10th to 11th avenues. Officials said the department hopes to make it an annual event and eventually cover the whole city.
