A 62-year-old man was arrested this morning on suspicion of interfering with firefighters after he allegedly admitted to starting a dumpster fire in downtown Redding.
Crews responded to the fire in the 1600 block of Tehama Street around 4:15 a.m. and found Robert James Hill of Redding locked inside the dumpster enclosure, officer Chris Smyrnos said in a press release.
Hill told firefighters that he set the fire to keep his hands warm. He then told crews he wanted to retrieve a stick from the dumpster but was told to stand back.
Hill refused and went and got the stick then raised it above his head in a threatening manner and told firefighters it was his “nightstick,” Smyrnos reported.
Police arrested Hill on suspicion of arson, interfering with firefighters and brandishing a weapon. He was booked into the Shasta County Jail.
