Crews make progress against fast-moving wildfire

A red-flag warning was lifted Monday and improved weather conditions helped crews slow a fast-moving wildfire in Northern California, a fire official said.

More than 1,600 firefighters used the break in the weather to enforce containment lines around the Scotts Fire, which was threatening about 300 homes and 40 other structures outside Ukiah, state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant said.

With crews gaining on the fire and winds dying down after gusting up to 40 mph, officials canceled evacuation warnings, Berlant said.
