Searing winds from the east peeled back the marine layer —- the cool, moist air that blows in from the ocean —- and made Friday the hottest Sept. 14 in recorded history in much of North County, meteorologists said.
Vista reached a record 106 degrees —- a couple of degrees hotter than Palm Springs. Miramar Marine Corps Air Station reached 108 degrees, said Alex Tardy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
