Oakland: Homeless camp under I-880 overpass catches fire

Firefighters spent more than 30 minutes Friday morning controlling a fire that erupted in a homeless encampment tucked into the foundation of the 16th Avenue overpass on I-880.

About 8:40 a.m., an Oakland police officer spotted thick black smoke coming from the under the structure, which connects 16th Avenue and Embarcadero. Eighteen firefighters responded, extinguishing the blaze in a half-hour.
