GALT, CA – Firefighters said they found the body of an elderly woman Tuesday in a Galt home destroyed by a fire overnight.
According to Cosumnes Community Services District spokesman Steve Capps, the fire began around 10:50 p.m. Monday at the home on Harvey Road.
Capps said the flames were controlled in about an hour, but the roof collapsed. No firefighters were injured. Crews stayed on scene into Tuesday morning to snuff out hot spots.
Family members said Ruth Miller, 88, lived alone in the home. Cosumnes Fire Marshall George Apple said the family last saw Miller around 9:30 Monday night, sitting in the living room of the home. Her family said Miller was a no-smoker.
Apple said Miller’s relatives believes she had smoke detectors but she had had problems with them lately.
The Sacramento County Coroner Office is expected to make a formal identification of the body.
CCSD continues to investigate the cause of the blaze. The district wants to remind this is a dangerous time of year because it is cold and people have floor heating lamps.
