An elderly man was in critical condition at Kern Medical Center late Saturday afternoon due to smoke inhalation after firefighters rescued him from his burning Lamont house earlier in the day. Kern County firefighters received a call around 1:51 p.m. on a home in the 8100 block of Palm Avenue, said Kern County Fire Department Capt. Tommy Brown.
When they arrived on scene, they found nearly half of the home on fire and smoke pouring out of the windows. About 19 firefighters fought the blaze, Brown said.
Two firefighters found the man, 82-year-old Milburn Irwin, screaming for help in the hot, smoke-filled living room. Irwin uses a walker and has limited mobility, Brown said. Despite the poor visibility, the firefighters pulled him low to the ground and got him out.
His daughter said the fire started in a bedroom after she heard a loud boom, according to Brown. The woman told the fire department she could not get Irwin out of the house, so she fled and asked firefighters for help. She was not injured. Damage is estimated at around $100,000.
