Firefighters Break into Burning Home, Aid 2 Struggling Dogs

tuscon.jpg Tucson firefighters rescued two dogs after busting through a wrought-iron door and into a burning home on the South Side Tuesday morning, an official said. When firefighters arrived at the home in the 700 block West Calle Colado, near South 12th Avenue and West Valencia Road, they found flames coming from a corner bedroom, said Capt. Norm Carlton, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

Once inside, they found two dogs — one large and one medium sized — barely breathing in the living room, he said.

Paramedics gave the dogs oxygen and contacted the Pima Animal Care Center, Carlton said.

“They appeared to be doing just fine when (the animal care officer) took them,” he said.

The medium-sized dog was walking around, and the larger one was able to move its head, Carlton said.

It took 24 firefighters about 15 minutes to contain the blaze, which caused about $90,000 in damage. The cause is still under investigation. Neighbors reported the fire just before 10 a.m., Carlton said.

The dogs, which appeared to be pit-bull mixes, were doing better later in the afternoon, said Vicki Ann Duraine, a spokeswoman for the Pima Animal Care Center. Both dogs were responsive and eating after a veterinarian gave them some medication to help them regain their appetite, she said.
