On March 29, 2008 at approximately 11:18am, seven units from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to a abandoned single story structure fire in the 100 block of West Vine Street. The first arriving unit reported, a moderate amount of flame and smoke showing from the rear of the structure.
Fire department officials contribute a quick response and an aggressive interior attack in helping extinguish the fire and preventing it from spreading through the rest of the structure.Upon a detailed secondary search of the structure, Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Buchanan discovered seven newborn kittens in a small hole in an interior wall. Firefighter/Paramedic Buchanan, immediately extricated the kittens from the wall and started cooling and oxygen therapy measures in an effort to preserve their lives. All seven kittens were handed over to San Bernardino City Animal Control officials in critical, but stable condition for further care and treatment. Currently the fire is under investigation.
