At 2307 on 3/31/08 the San Bernardino City Fire Dispatch center received multiple calls for a vehicle fire next to a residence. Six fire units carrying 24 firefighters responded to the incident which was located at 14th Street and G Street.
The first arriving unit found a vehicle that was fully engulfed in flames and adjacent to a residential structure lapping underneath the eaves. They were also approached by a male burn victim suffering from second and third degree burns to his upper torso and arms.
San Bernardino City firefighters quickly put out the vehicle fire, keeping it from spreading into the home and simultaneously treated the burn victim for his injuries. The victim was taken to a local burn center and treated by fire department Paramedics.
The vehicle was a complete loss and the home suffered only minor damage.
After an preliminary investigation of the incident, firefighters were told that the vehicle ignited when a person standing near the burn victim lit a cigarette while trying to siphon fuel from the gas tank.
