Fire Displaces 12 In Costa Mesa Apartment

April 21, 2008

A couple celebrating their one-year anniversary and about ten other residents, have been displaced from their Costa Mesa apartment building after an early-morning fire that had to be put out by about 40 firefighters.

The couple’s precious wedding mementos were all saved. For a time, the couple’s 15-year-old cat, ironically named Smokey, was missing but KCAL 9′s Michele Gile reported Monday late afternoon that Smokey was found wandering about the apartment complex and was safe and sound.

Officials believe a halogen light fixture ignited some bedding and caused the blaze.

The fire at the Villa Venetia Apartment Homes, 2775 Mesa Verde Drive
East, was reported about 11:10 p.m. Sunday and extinguished about an hour and a half later, said Battalion Chief Scott Broussard of the Costa Mesa Fire Department.

There were no injuries, but at least 12 people were displaced, said Barbara Marcosa of the Costa Mesa Fire Department.

The fire started in the apartment beneath that of the young couple and
affected four units, Channel 9 reported.

The fire caused $600,000 in damage to the building and $150,000 in
damage to contents, Marcosa said.    WATCH NEWS VIDEO
