12 Grass Fires Within San Bernardino City Limits in under 10 hours

April 27, 2008

At 8:33 am this morning multiple units from the City Fire Department responded to the first of many brush fires in vacant fields through out the city. The first fire was reported at Arden and Highland Avenue. City fire units were able to knock this half-acre fire down in minutes. Starting at 12:00 PM fire units were on the move again responding to Sterling and Fifth for a brush fire in an open field. This brush fire was reported as a half to one acre with no structures threatened and was also extinguished quickly by city firefighters. Then throughout the day, City firefighters were kept busy responding to ten other brush fires, all of them in open fields with extensive growth of annual grass.

One of the largest brush fires reported today came in at 5:09 PM. Fire units from San Bernardino and Rialto responded and were able to stop the progression of the fire before several mobile homes in a near by mobile home park were seriously damaged or destroyed. A total of four brush fires were reported and extinguished on the West Side of the City and eight brush fires were extinguished on the East Side.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians on any of the fires and no damage was reported to any structures. All the fires are currently under investigation by City arson investigators.

The City Fire Department would like to remind all of its residents and land owners that now is the time to make sure that all dead vegetation is cleared away from there homes to a minimum of 30 feet. Open fields should be cleared or at a minimum disked so that dead vegetation is no higher then three inches above mineral soil. For further information regarding brush clearances and fire breaks City residents should call the City Fire Prevention Beau at (909) 384-5388.
