Firefighters Are Consolidating Camps

Jul. 16–Firefighters on the Basin Complex and Indians fires in Los Padres National Forest are consolidating their camps today.

Crews are moving from a temporary site at the Carmel Valley Airport and from a site in King City to an area of Tassajara Road.

“It’s going to be so much easier for them to get information out to everyone,” said Susan Stevens spokeswoman for the Basin Fire.

Firefighters will still remain at Andrew Molera State Park on the coast side of the Basin Fire where mop up work is about 90 percent completed, Stevens said.

Crews there are now working to recondition areas within the interior of the blaze. Their work will include pushing brush that was cleared back over bare spots, the building of water bars and leveling of berms along dozer lines. The efforts are intended to reduce water run off and erosion during the winter and minimize the visual impacts to return the terrain to its original condition, Stevens said.

A full emergency response team is scheduled to arrive at the Indians and Basin fires by August 11, she said.

That team will conduct a full evaluation of the burned area and develop a proposed rehab plan for lands within the national forest.

The team is currently assigned to the Gap Fire in Santa Barbara County.

The Indians Fire which began on June 8 west of King City is 100 percent contained.

Meanwhile the Basin Fire is 61 percent contained with the majority of the fire activity continuing on the northern

and eastern edges. The fire was started by lightning on June 21.
