Pets killed, firefighter hurt in house fire

8:19 a.m. A fire that burned part of a home near Central High School East Campus this morning killed three pets and sent one firefighter to the hospital with second-degree burns.

The two men who live there were not home when the fire broke out.

According to Fresno Fire Department officials, the fire apparently started at the rear of the house and spread through the attic, causing about $300,000 damage confined to those areas. The tile roof was apparently not damaged.

The first firefighters on the scene were told a person might be trapped in the house, but that report was unfounded.

Residents Michael Lopez and Stan Ebert had been gone about 30 minutes to run an errand and came back to find the house on fire.

They had five dogs and two cats. Two dogs and one cat were found dead.

One firefighter suffered second-degree burns on his neck. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

About 35 firefighters responded.

Lansing Way in front of the home and the connecting streets in the subdivision are closed, but local traffic isn’t affected.
