Three Alarm Fire Sweeps Morgan Hill Apartments

August 3, 2008

On Thursday, July 31, 2008 at approximately 2:30 p.m. units of the Santa Clara County Fire Department, assisted by CAL FIRE, the South Santa Clara County Fire Department, San Jose Fire, and the City of Santa Clara Fire Department worked in concert to fight a fire that swept the attic space of a multi-unit, two-story townhouse at 16827 Sorrel Way.

Initial reports indicated that a small fire had broken out on the roof of the building. Arriving units discovered light smoke showing that quickly began to spread through the attic space, eventually consuming much of the structure’s roof.

Windy conditions combined with a shake roof allowed the fire to advance quickly. Embers were blown from the original fire building to an adjacent structure igniting at least two additional roof fires that were extinguished by San Jose Engine Company 35 led by Captain Trent Engler.

At least five units within the building suffered fire and water damage. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
