Three Ventura County Fire Department employees chose a table off to the side at the eighth annual Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday because, unlike the other tables with their Tonka police car and ambulance centerpieces, this one was decorated by a plastic fire hat.
Roger Clow, John Hayes and Dnay Featherstone work at the Fire Department’s support services complex in Oxnard as a fleet manager, fire mechanic and support services worker, respectively. They were at the Camarillo Health Care District’s office Wednesday to eat the taco and enchilada lunch provided by the district’s Volunteer Guild as a thank you to emergency responders and those who work with them.
Clow said he went for two reasons: “To help support the community and the people who support us. And lunch.”
The Volunteer Guild started the annual free luncheon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when members decided to give up their own appreciation luncheon and give it instead to police, firefighters and paramedics.
