Electrical Equipment Starts Rancho Palos Verde Blaze

Firefighters quickly extinguished a two-acre brush fire sparked by malfunctioning electrical equipment Tuesday morning in Rancho Palos Verdes, officials said.

The two-alarm blaze, which trailed up a hillside covered in medium to heavy dry brush between Indian Peak and Crestridge roads, ignited around 9 a.m., said Darryl Jacobs, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

With the help of two water-dropping helicopters and a plane dumping flame-retardant foam, 66 firefighters from the Peninsula, Carson and Lomita, as well as camp crews from Malibu, extinguished the blaze in about 40 minutes, Jacobs said.

Hot Southern California Edison electrical equipment fell onto the dry brush, sparking the blaze that briefly threatened a nearby retirement home and a local preschool, said county fire Capt. Bryan Wells of the Rolling Hills Estates station.

“The vault exploded, caused a power surge on that adjacent power pole, and a device on the power pole failed,” he said. “That dropped down and started the brush fire.”
