November 5, 2008

OROVILLE — A local golf cart maintenance business was destroyed by flames Tuesday evening, though firefighters were able to save a residence located nearby. At about 5:20 p.m., a fire was reported at the maintenance shop of Northern Golf Carts at 4688 Foothill Blvd.

The shop is adjacent to the business owner’s home and stood about 30 feet from the house.

The owner’s wife was reportedly getting a glass of water in her home when she noticed the fire. As she was calling 9-1-1, several drivers passing by the structure also called emergency personnel to report the fire.

Cal Fire-Butte County firefighters responded to the blaze, sending a total of 10 engines and three water tenders to the scene.

“We could see a large black column as we were coming from Bangor,” said Scott McClean, Cal Fire-Butte County public information officer. “We knew we were in for a fire.”

McClean said firefighters were able to knock down the blaze relatively quickly, but said the building was completely consumed by flames. He said several golf carts in the building were also lost.
