The Woodland Professional Firefighters Association and the Woodland Professional Police Officers Association are gearing up to take their friendly rivalry to the gridiron of Woodland High School in the 2nd “Turkey Bowl” flag football game on Saturday.
The teams intend to “leave it all on the field” this year as a fundraiser for the Yolo Food Bank.
This year’s game will build on the success of Turkey Bowl 2007 held at Douglass Middle School in December. The police narrowly eked out a win over the “far more talented (and clearly better looking) firefighters in a nail biter of a game,” according to a Fire Department spokesman.
“It was a good game.” said Firefighter’s Coach Rich Thomas. “My team came to show those cops how firefighters play football, and we let them have the win because the game is, after all, about charity”
Thomas was heard later asking why the referee was napping through most of the third quarter.
Police Coach Anthony Cucci was pleased with the game of his offiers.
“You know, we used some of the SWAT gear,” stated Cucci, “to listen in on the plays being called by the firefighters quarterback, Curtis Maglinte.”
This year’s showdown is meant to keep spectators on the edge of their seats.
Spectators are asked to bring any canned food item to the front gates of Woodland High Football Stadium as admission.
