Guitar speaker blows, fire damages music store

December 15, 2008

A fire in a guitar practice room at an Arden Way musical instrument store Saturday morning caused an estimated $25,000 in damage to the building and an unspecified amount to contents.

Most of the loss was due to water damage from overhead sprinklers, said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Capt. Christian Pebbles.

Firefighters called to the 5:30 a.m. fire first responded to the Circuit City where smoke had been reported.

Firefighters determined that the fire was actually burning in the adjacent Guitar Center business, 2120 Alta Arden Expressway. The fire at the Guitar Center was isolated to an acoustic room for playing guitars.

The blaze had been contained to the small room by automatic sprinklers but not extinguished. Firefighters put out the fire.

Pebbles said that the fire appeared to originate with a “catastrophic failure of a powered speaker.”

The fire initially was a three-alarm fire but was downgraded to two-alarm after firefighters arrived on scene.

“Because of the size of the structure, three alarms were requested,” said Pebbles. “Once we obtained a little more information, the third alarm was cancelled. We had active smoke and water flow. If we had something that got out or reach of the sprinklers we would have had trouble. You get companies rolling and if you don’t need them you turn them around. It’s easier to do that than it is to play catch up.”
