DELHI — A large fire transformed a big rig into a heap of hulking, charred remains within minutes on Monday, and caused massive damage to another truck parked a few feet away.

The fire was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m. in an empty lot off Stephens Street in Delhi. Firefighters from Merced County Fire Department/Cal Fire responded to the scene, where they found the tractor portion of the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

Fire Capt. Gabriel Santos said the blaze was brought under control in about eight minutes. Fortunately, no one was injured. Santos said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Still, Santos said the fire could have been much worse. About eight big rigs were parked in the same lot, not far from the fire. Santos said his greatest fear was that a trucker was sleeping inside the burning truck — which turned out not to be the case.
