Two Nicholas County volunteer firefighters are dead after being killed in the line of duty on Thursday night. The two men were members of the Craigsville Beaver Cottle Volunteer Fire Department.The men died when they entered a burning mobile home in the Cottle area at around 10:00 Thursday night in an attempt to knock down a heavily involved blaze.
The firefighters were trying to keep the flames from spreading to several other nearby structures.
Investigators with the state Fire Marshal’s Office are working to determine what exactly happened.
The two men who were killed are not being identified publicly at this point but fire department officials say the two were veteran firefighters.
The cause of the fire is not known. Approximately 18 firemen from the station were on the scene during the blaze. Several attempts were made to reach the men, but all rescue efforts failed.
