The San Rafael Fire Department’s dispatch center will go dark for good next month as part of a plan to save money and centralize regional emergency response.
San Rafael firefighters, who for years received assignments from an in-house dispatcher, now will be deployed through the Marin County Public Safety Communications Center, known as the Comm Center. San Rafael fire will join 17 other Marin fire and law enforcement agencies dispatched by the county.
“This move makes good sense to me,” San Rafael fire Chief Chris Gray said. “It serves no purpose that the San Rafael Fire Department maintain a standalone dispatch center when the 10 other (fire) agencies are being dispatched from one source.”
