Oklahoma City firefighter dies after battling three-alarm apartment fire

March 5, 2009

An Oklahoma City firefighter collapsed and later died after battling a blaze Wednesday, officials said.
Cpl. Christopher Allen Dill, 43, collapsed after fighting a three-alarm fire at the Penn Grand Apartments, 3726 S Pennsylvania Ave., said Linda Rains, Oklahoma City Fire Department spokeswoman.

He was taken by ambulance to Integris Southwest Medical Center, where he died.

Fire officials didn’t specify what caused Dill to collapse, but in a statement said he had “made the supreme sacrifice” and “died in the line of duty.”

“He was a heck of a firefighter,” Deputy Fire Chief Cecil Clay said. “A good, strong man that never complained about anything, not even today. He told his battalion chief that his back was hurting but said it wasn’t anything eight hours of sleep wouldn’t take care of.”

Firefighters gathered with Dill’s wife, Julie, at the hospital Wednesday night. The couple have two daughters, Clay said.

“We’re all kind of still in shock,” Clay said.

Dill had been with the fire department for 15 years, Rains said. He was promoted to the rank of corporal in 1996.

“He was greatly respected by his fellow firefighters and will be truly missed,” Rains wrote in a news release. “The department’s thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this tragic time.”
