On Tuesday, March 25, 2009 at 4:20 p.m., units of the San Jose Fire Department responded to reports of smoke and fire from a single-family home at 141 Juneberry Court. Upon their arrival firefighters discovered a single-story structure with smoke and flames showing from the roof.
A second-alarm was called due to exposure issues and the Incident Commander, Battalion Chief Paul Schuller, directed all companies to leave the interior of the structure due to light weight construction. Shortly after the vacate order the home’s roof collapsed leaving the home a complete loss.
While firefighters contained the first fire and proceeded with salvage operations a home located at 128 Sugar Maple Drive, one block south of the first incident, erupted in flames after a firebrand apparently landed on the home’s wood shake roof.
Firefighters from the first fire quickly repositioned their equipment and initiated operations. A second-alarm was struck by Battalion Chief Alan Anderson to contend with the quick moving fire.
Engine 26 deployed a deck gun while Truck 9 unleashed an aerial master stream to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to additional structures in the area.
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital after suffering a back injury and a resident of an adjacent home was treated on the scene for mild smoke inhalation.
Firefighters were able to rescue a black Labrador retriever from the second fire.
