Fire in Phelan California claims 18-month-old child

April 2, 2009

An anguished mother screamed for her 18-month-old son who died in an early Thursday morning fire in the family’s small home, San Bernardino County fire officials said.

The mother of the child awoke to the boy crying, went to his room and saw the child’s bedroom was filled with smoke and flames, said Tracey Martinez, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

“She tried to rescue him but the heat pushed her back,” Martinez said. The woman then grabbed her 3-year-old daughter, exited the home and called 911. Neither the mother or 3-year-old were hurt in the blaze.

Officials said they received the first call at 6:47 a.m. from the single-family home in the 10600 block of Monte Vista Road.
When fire officials arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

“As soon as the firefighters were told by the mother there was a child still inside, they automatically tried a rescue operation,” Martinez said. Rescuers used fans to try to push the flames back and pushed water into the small 800-square-foot structure from both sides but when they reached the boy, he had already perished.

The San Bernardino County Fire and Sheriff’s departments will conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire.
