Prince George Firefighter Severely Burned in Morning Fire

April 8, 2009

A Prince George’s County firefighter sustained critical burns early this morning during a fire inside a Kettering home, department officials said.

The cause of the 2 a.m. fire at the house in the unit block of Herrington Drive appears to be suspicious, the fire department said in a statement on the incident.

Firefighters had entered the house to battle the blaze when a device attached to the injured firefighter’s breathing apparatus alerted others that he was in distress. His colleagues issued a “mayday” alert, and minutes after that sounded, the injured firefighter was found in the first-floor living room and pulled out of the house through a window.

The firefighter had severe burns on his face and head and is listed in critical but stable condition, according to the statement. He was taken to the Washington Hospital Center burn unit.

Officials did not identify the injured firefighter but said he is 21 years old and a four-year career member of the department.
