A fire destroyed a single-family home in west Modesto on Thursday evening, officials reported.
Firefighters received a report of a fire in the 1900 block of Vernon Avenue about 6:30 p.m.
“The cause is under investigation, but it appears to be an accident and started on the front porch,” said Assistant Chief Mike Hillar with the Burbank-Paradise Fire District. “The front porch was fully involved when we got there, and it had already run into the attic.”
Firefighters had the blaze knocked down within 20 minutes and extinguished 10 to 15 minutes later. Two neighbors, armed with a garden hose and a dry chemical extinguisher, tried to put out the blaze before firefighters arrived but it was too intense.
Hillar said 15 Burbank- Paradise firefighters fought the blaze and were helped by five firefighters from the Woodland Avenue Fire District.
The 1900 block of Vernon Avenue is between Paradise and Robertson roads and just east of South Carpenter Road.
