Two Vallejo fires within 30 minutes stretch Vallejo firefighters

April 28, 2009

Back-to-back fires Monday night left the Vallejo Fire Department “stripped” and dependent on other cities to cover some calls, a fire official said today.

The two fires – the first at 9:58 p.m. and the second at 10:25 p.m. – caused little damage but stretched the limits of the fire department, officials said.

Capt. Eric Strom said about 18 of the department’s 21 firefighters on duty were out at either one or both fires.

The 9:58 p.m. blaze burned an attached storage shed at a single-family home in the 700 block of Tennessee Street. Strom said the fire was believed to have been caused by combustibles left too close to a water heater in the shed, which appeared to be a laundry room.

The two-alarm blaze is estimated to have caused about $10,000 in damage. The five occupants of the home, which was not damaged, escaped uninjured, Strom said.

The fire was contained in 15 minutes, but firefighters were on scene for three hours, Strom said.

The second fire, at 10:25 p.m. in the 100 block of Hogan Avenue, is believed to have started along the railroad tracks between homes on Hogan Avenue and Lofas Place, Strom said.
