Alameda Fire Union calls for resignation of Chief

June 18, 2009

During the public comments portion of Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Dominic Weaver, President of the Alameda Firefighters Association, announced after several dicussions amongst the membership, the Firefighters have declared that they have no confidence in the leadership of Fire Chief David Kapler and are asking for his resignation.

He gave a laundry list of reasons why he and the union felt as though the Chief needs to go, but refused to go into more detail in this “public setting.”

The following is a video of the meeting:

Are votes of no confidence an effective statement? I think they mostly cause the organizations to look bad. I also think it forces too many interdepartment problems out into the public eye.

But I am not there, so I don’t know what started their bad blood.

The membership (labor union) is not at liberty to fire the chief when he becomes ineffective and puts the department (line personnel), the public, and the entire city in danger.
The vote of no confidence is labor’s way of firing him. It says to the public we as public servants can no longer trust our lives, or the public we serve in the shadow of the chief. If anyone can say that with confidence, it is the line personnel who have front row seats to a chief who has no backbone and is only there to boost his already fat pension from previous careers in the fire service.
Trust me maddog, when the chief says to you, “I only sell to the public what the city manager tells me to sell”, referring to cutting an already understaffed department,…….it’s then you know you have no chief, just a puppet who will sell you up the river and not think twice about it.
This shit bag at some point stopped being a fireman and became a grade “A” money hungry pussy. The revolving door for these money grubbers revolves every fire years, then in comes a new one just looking to sit in that chair for a few years and pad his pension. It’s an “At will” job. If he doesn’t do what the city manager tells him to do, he can be fired. He’s a fucking puppet, plain and simple. I have yet to see a real man take that job. Maybe in other cities, but not this one.
When you say interdepartmental problems and worrying about them getting out into the public, you must think that it can somehow be solved within the walls of city hall. Think about this, who do you think hired him? Answer: Not the public, not the firefighters, ….it was the people in city hall. There is not a drop of bad blood between us, because we do not share any blood with this guy. This guy had his firefighter blood drained from him when he replaced it with a money hungry, bleeding, political pussy.

All I can say BADBOB is that is one of the most STRAIGHT forward and articulate descriptions of a “Vote of NO Confidence” I have EVER heard!!!! Thank You for calling it like it is. Good luck to you guy’s.

I disagree with you SoCalFF. I don’t think that votes of no confidence do anything to help the departments involved. All they do is air the laundry.
