CARLSBAD — More than 50 lunchtime patrons were evacuated from two businesses, including a landmark meat store/restaurant, during a fire yesterday, authorities said. The fire was reported about 11:40 a.m. in a single-story building on Paseo del Norte near Palomar Airport Road that houses Tip Top Meats and Carlsbad Ranch Market, said Battalion Chief Mike Davis of the Carlsbad Fire Department. Davis said the fire began in a storage area at the back of the market. The fire did not reach Tip Top Meats, but about 50 to 60 patrons were evacuated from both businesses, Davis said. Tip Top Meats reopened for business about 45 minutes later, he said. Twenty-two firefighters had the blaze under control in about 10 minutes. Davis estimated damage to the structure at about $10,000.
