East Desert Firefighters Battle Freeway Fire

July 7, 2009

Palm Springs, CA – Cleanup efforts continued Monday after firefighters extinguished a tamarisk tree fire along Interstate 10, east of Date Palm Drive on Sunday night.

The slow, or No. 4, lane between Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive was closed most of Monday.

“There’s a lot of heavy mop-up involved,” Cal Fire Battalion Chief David Avila said Monday while firefighters doused smoky, burned-out areas along the north side of the I-10 freeway.

“We want to get aggressive with these burning piles of debris before the wind and heat picks up,” he said.

The Sunday evening fire engulfed a mile-long, 50-foot wide stretch of tamarisk trees in flames and plumes of dark smoke.

The fire, first reported at 5:46 p.m., eventually jumped the interstate and was burning on both sides of the freeway.

Firefighters had the blaze 100 percent contained by 8:50 p.m., California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials said. Watch Video
