Arson Fire taxes Vallejo Resources

August 7, 2009

Police arrested one person in connection to a large arson fire Thursday, fire officials said.

The fire, which began at about 2:30 p.m., scorched the sides of a 100-foot embankment of the railroad tracks near the intersection of Sacramento and Illinois streets, threatening several structures.

“It was dicey for a while. We fully expected one or two (homes) going,” Assistant Vallejo Fire Chief Greg Falkenthal said.

It took about an hour and half to get the fire under control and required every firefighter on duty, all five engines and the city’s ladder truck, Faleknthal said.

No one was injured, he said.

The fire was started in multiple locations around the Sacramento Street overpass and merged into one large blaze, Falkenthal said.

It is unclear how large of an area was burned because of the vertical slope, though the damage did spread for about three blocks.
