Salinas firefighters extinguished a blaze that burned most of the front porch and attic of a south Salinas home around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday on the 400 block of Church Street. Officials said an occupant of the house was sm oking a cigarette on the porch. After she put out the cigarette, officials said, the wind may have reignited it. The wind fanned the blaze to the living room and up the attic. Salinas Fire Chief Kim Raddatz said “aggressive firefighting” contained the fire to the front portion of the house. One person was in the house, Raddatz said, but there were no injuries. Initial cost of damage is estimated up to $100,000, he said.
