A suspected kitchen fire in Walnut Creek has displaced eight residents at The Keys Condominiums at 410 N. Civic Drive, according to fire officials.
Fire crews were called to the scene of the two-alarm fire at 5:36 p.m., Saturday. About 200 people were evacuated from one of the several buildings at the condo complex, said Battalion Chief Dave George with the Contra Costa Fire District. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in an hour and no injuries were reported, said George.
Four condos were damaged and officials think the fire began in a kitchen in unit 406, he said. The damage is estimated at $220,000. The cause is still under investigation, George said.
The American Red Cross was called in for the residents who may be temporarily displaced because of fire and smoke damage.
Several agencies, including Moraga-Orinda and San Ramon Valley Fire District, were called in because finding a fire at The Keys can be difficult with its many buildings and units, said George.
“What makes this fire challenging is … finding the fire when there is thick smoke throughout several floors,” said George. “It involves a lot of effort to find where the fire is and at the same time help people get out. These kinds of fire are very labor intensive.”
The other residents who were evacuated were expected to be let back into their homes Saturday night.
