LA woman apparently using charcoal for heat dies

A woman died Monday in a house fire that may have been caused by burning charcoal briquettes for heat, firefighters say. The 4:47 a.m. fire was confined to one bedroom in an 87-year-old, 1,309-square-foot home in South Los Angeles, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

SAN JOSE — Firefighters responded to a two alarm blaze in South San Jose early Christmas morning. It was reported just after midnight Friday in the 500 block of Branham Lane East. The fire completely destroyed the townhouse and damage was estimated at $500,000.
