SACRAMENTO, CA – Two large, feral dogs were believed to be safe and unharmed after the pair needed to be rescued from the bottom of an abandoned well by Sacramento fire crews Saturday.
Sacramento firefighters were called out after Sacramento City Animal Control officers found the animals at the bottom of the 20-foot-deep well inside an abandoned well house on the 4100 block of Franklin Boulevard in Sacramento around 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Sacramento Fire Capt. Jim Doucette said.
A pair of firefighters armed with animal control tranquilizer guns went down into the well for a confined space rescue, successfully putting the dogs to sleep. The animals were then attached to harnesses and hoisted out of the well, Doucette said.
The dogs were taken by Animal Control, but appeared to be in good shape despite their ordeal, Doucette said.
It wasn’t immediately clear how the dogs got inside the well house. Firefighters requested Sacramento City Housing and Dangerous Buildings personnel to check and secure the building.
