County Fire crews conduct confined-space rescue of family pet

February 2, 2010

San Bernardino County Fire Department firefighters and technical rescue personnel safely rescued a dog that had fallen down a septic system leach hole on the evening of Fri., Jan. 22.

Upon arrival crews from Phelan Sta. 10 were advised that the dog, a large black-haired mix breed, had fallen during a walk with its owner just outside the owner’s home. The pit, approximately 4-5 feet wide and 13 feet deep, appeared to be part of the septic system in the owner’s front yard in the 9000 block of Monte Vista Rd.

Members of County Fire’s Technical Rescue Team were called from Hesperia Station 301 to assist. Together the crews set up for a confined-space rescue operation, and rigged a high-angle rope system, lowering a rescuer who was then able to harness the dog before being raised back above ground.

“The guys did a great job working together,” said Battalion Chief Dan Filter. “When we got on scene we could see we were going to need to slow down go through all the proper steps to do this right.”

The dog was returned unharmed to a thankful owner. “Other than needing a bath, it was just fine,” Filter said.
