FAIRFIELD – A two-story Jasmine Street home was seriously damaged today in a fire.
A resident was making French fries with cooking oil on a kitchen stove top at around 4:30 p.m. when the oil ignited, according to firefighters.
The resident tried to put out the fire by throwing flour at the flames, which made the fire worse. By the time another person in the house returned from a neighbor’s home with a fire extinguisher, flames had already spread to the kitchen’s ceiling and cabinets.
Firefighters saw heavy black smoke pouring from the home’s windows when they arrived within four minutes of the first 911 calls reporting the blaze.
The fire gutted the kitchen and some nearby rooms on the first level of the home, but damage to the second floor was limited to smoke and heat damage, according to Assistant Fire Marshal Jerry Clark.
Another fire earlier in the day caused moderate damage to a Taft Street home. The noontime fire forced the residents to seek temporary accommodations from the Red Cross.
Damage estimates for both fires were unavailable tonight.
