Hello Friends, Family, and fellow Firefighters,
My name is Brent Berkompas a firefighter with the City of San Bernardino here in Southern California. I am sending out this message on behalf of a friend and fellow coworker of mine Jim Davis. Jim had a significant toxic exposure during “The Queen City Barrel Fire” and has since been suffering from chronic respiratory failure, a disease that has left him severely disabled. Jim’s illness has no cure. His diaphragm is paralyzed which has left him on oxygen and without the ability to ever lie flat again. The strain on his body has also damaged his heart and continues to cause other major health concerns. With all of these health issues, Jim has been left with no choice but to leave the job he has loved for twelve years and go on disability, “early retirement”. Disabled is a word his fellow firefighters never thought they would use to describe him, it’s a word that even Jim will not use to describe himself. That is why at the age of only 35 he chooses to use the words “early Retirement”.
Jim and I began our careers in the fire service together with the City of Cincinnati back in 1998. It was immediately clear to me that Jim was one of the good guys. He is the kind of guy that would give the shirt off his back to help a friend, a dedicated husband and father, and truly good person.
Attached you will find details of a benefit being organized on behalf of Jim and his family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
